I'm goin ta spend sum dough and wanted opinions on some releases. I'm gettin the 5/11/72 and not sure on the other one. Choices are dp vol 31 8/4&6/74 or Road Trips Vol 1#3 7/31/71 & 8/23/71. Just curious on the sound quality etc... if one of these stand out. The new 76 road trip is in the running as well.

I'd go w/DP Vol. 31...

More songs, some excellent versions, inc. a top flight "Eyes" from the NJ show (which includes Bobby afterward calling someone an idiot for climbing on a fence and getting cut), and a stellar PITB--ScarletBegonias--PITB sandwich.

Of course if you don't have them, I'd choose DP Vol. 29 5/21/77 or DP Vol. 10 12/29/77 over any of the choices you listed above. The 12/29/77 show is especially a must-have.

I have both the 77's killer shows. The 5/19 is one of my favorite 77's even if they didn't play an encore.

DP 31.

I know the first disc like the back of my hand and its the entire way through 5+ stars. Everything is played perfectly. Just jammed out to the scarlet from that disc on my way home, it was great.

Both DP 31 and RT Vol. 1, #3 are fine choices, but given you've only listed these two, I'd go for the Summer '71 RT. The Summer '71 should be a nice contrast to whatever you choose from Europe '72.

And since you are spending $$ on some Europe '72, I'd definitely pick up Paris 5/3. Rotterdam 5/11 is worthy of all of the praise given to it, but for my 2 cents worth, the performance on 5/3 in Paris stands as its equal. Beautiful, emotional, energetic and highly inventive synergistic playing especially on the long jam from Truckin' through a gorgeous, many faceted Other One that easily rolls in and out of Bobby McGee and into a sweet and pensive Wharf Rat is playing of the highest order. Some of the passages early in The Other One conjure up large sweeping epic landscapes, only to quickly take you into the feeling of an intimate walk along the Seine on a close and quiet foggy night. Phil offers his quiet rumbles of thunder and at one point Keith alone plays a hint of Dark Star - only a couple of bars, and played with a humorous air . . . and that's just the beginning of the journey . . . breathtakingly beautiful!! I can't recall if it's 5/3 or some other date that takes the cake for most songs played on this tour . . . on 5/3 they are all played well.

You can't go wrong with Rotterdam 5/11 and Paris 5/3 as a nice complimentary combo. Epic performances of Dark Star and The Other One to fill those long winter nights. enjoy!

Thirded on Dicks Picks 31!

Being a compilation of three excellent nights, this is easily one of the most consistent picks from start to finish, with great song selection and some absolutely stunning jams. Just put it on and press play, no need to skip around. The best release from '74, IMO, besides the Road Trips compilation of 6/16 and 6/18.

already ordered by the time you posted. Went with the E72 shows mainly because they are not on archive anymore. I wish Rhino was still making the Dicks Picks series. Seems like it should always bring in a profit. I know you can download them but I still like to buy cds and have somthin to hold onto.

I agree with the previous poster that DP 10 and 29 are must haves. vol. 29 is, i think, 6 discs of music from a couple of dates from May 77.
Other than that, pretty much anything from Europe 72, if thats the direction you want to go. I like 5/26, its an extra long setlist, final night of the tour. You really can't go wrong w/ Europe 72, just pick a setlist you think looks interesting.

Does Dead.net have the entire tour up for individual show purchases now?
